Q: How long does it take to braid the average hair length(eg:shoulder length)?
A: Approximately eight hours when I work on my own.
Q:How are the ends of the hair finished off?
A: I sew the ends as it is neat and clean. Beads can be added and the thread can be the same colour as the hair. I do not have anything on the ends of my braids as it is so long and the natural oil in my hair keeps it from unravelling too quickly. There are other options and that can be discussed.
Q: How long can the hair style last?
A: I usually recommend a maximum of 3 months. The hair can be redone before this time and maintained indefinitely. I have had my hair in braids now since 1992 this time round.
Q: Does this style ruin your hair?
A: No. It is advisable to wash the hair straight after taking the hair out of the braids and condition it(I personally do not use conditioner. I use Aloe Vera straight from the plant). There will be more hair than usual coming out on the brush as it has not been combed for 3 months. There is a different way of looking after the hair during the time the braids are in and I can give you that info later.
Q: Will I get dandruff?
A: Some people do but it is actually rare. Usually they get what is called flakey scalp which is a different thing. Dandruff is due to many factors (eg:stress, diet and environment). Braids can add extra stress to the scalp and this can be combated with an infusion of Stinging Nettle (a herb). I also find that I don't have to wash my hair as often when in braids. The harsh detergents actually stress my scalp and my hair is actually cleaner during this time anyway. Massaging the scalp on a regular basis is also quite good plus using natural shampoo's from the local health food store.
Q: How long is your hair?
A: To my knees now!
Q: How long did it take to grow your hair?
A: 28 years!
